Kyle Olivier, a Grade 11 learner at HTS Drostdy in the Western Cape, has died alongside his father in a motorcycle accident, a tragedy that has left his school, family and community in deep mourning. Kyle was a well-known and much-loved member of the HTS Drostdy community. A talented and committed rugby player, he was set to represent the school’s Under-16A team in 2025 and had also been selected for the Boland Grant Khomo squad, a reflection of his dedication and promise in the sport. Coaches and teammates described him as determined, energetic and proud to wear his team’s colours.
Away from the rugby field, Kyle was remembered as friendly, approachable and full of humour. Teachers said he brought a positive presence into the classroom, while friends spoke of his loyalty and easygoing nature. He was a resident of House Dr Stals, where staff described him as helpful, enthusiastic and deeply involved in interhostel activities. His willingness to participate and support others made him a valued part of hostel life. Many have spoken of the profound loss felt by students who are now returning to school without a friend whose presence was a source of energy and joy.
